Girls Snack Bar Information
Welcome to the start of our Girls Water Polo Season!
Here is the link to the sign up page for snack bar, pasta parties and the
banquet/slide show/raffle. You can also go to www.mysignup.com and enter my
email address- shellflath@yahoo.com in the space below where is asks if you are
looking for a sign up. Then it will take you to a couple choices, we are NHS
Girls Water Polo Snack Bar.
http://www2.mysignup.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi?datafile=nhs_girls_water_polo_snack_bar
We ask that each family take at least one shift for our snack bar. It's a fun
job and you get a great view of the game. The money we make from the snack bar
helps offset the cost of our banquet and any other miscellaneous
items/activities during the season.
To start off our snack bar, we're asking for $25 from each player. The girls
can give it to either Allie or Nicole Flath at practice.
Each Tuesday before League games, families host a pasta party. These are fun to
do, it's neat to get to know the girls and they have a great time. You can do
it alone or share with someone.
Also, we will have a Holiday Pasta Party/Gift Exchange. Each girl should bring
a $10 gift to exchange. It will be held at Allie and Nicole Flath's house, more
information will follow.
Let me know if you have any questions shellflath@yahoo.com or 949-400-6741.
Thanks!

Apparel message from Mrs. Dillard
Hi Ladies,
I'm Mrs. Dillard (Sierra's Mom). I will be taking care of all the apparel ordering for this season. I need you to please email me what your cap # is going to be and which level you are on (JV or Varsity, or a 3rd I don't know about). Final review and approval of your cap # will be through Ed & Jure prior to ordering.
Regarding sizes I suggest you befriend a returning player that has some of the items and check out how the sizes run before you order what you need or want. Parkas STRONGLY recommended since it will be COLD some days in January & February and it will be your best friend.
Those of you that are new this season WELCOME to the TEAM glad you joined. Those of you returning WELCOME BACK. Each of you has a strength you bring to the team so take the challenge of being a mentor and choose a new team member and share your skills and help them find what their strength is. It's going to be a super year and hope we can all come together and have a few team bonding gatherings. I'm not the Mom in charge of that area but I know the coaches always encourage those activities. I did hear no practice over Christmas break... someone plan a social before break.
I look forward to the upcoming season & continuing my practice of taking action shots & candids to share with the team throughout the season. Who would of known waterpolo is one of the most challenging sports to photograph. Thust lies the fun for me.
My email address is - leeanndillard66@hotmail.com
It's extremely important that in the subject line you have your name and incl Girls NHS waterpolo ROCKS!
Otherwise your message will go to my junk mail.
Thank you.

Fund Raising for NHS Water Polo
From Vicki Thomas:
The boys water polo has a strong community supporter this year, a local business who wants to help us in managing our team's tournament fees. La Sirena Grill, located in the Orchard Hills shopping center, has graciously agreed to help our team raise funds to pay for our tournaments!!
Here's how it works:
1. Players and their families and friends eat at La Sirena on Tuesday evenings beginning this week through November 2nd, from 6 pm to 9 pm.
2. La Sirena will provide a percentage of all their business on Tuesday evenings to the NHS boys water polo team.
It's as simple as that!
So, please plan to spend a little time at La Sirena Grill on Tuesdays - bring your friends, your family, or order food to take out. It's all good, and it's all good for the team, but it takes your support to earn La Sirena's support.
See you Tuesday!!

LOS ANGELES TIMES 2006
October 04, 2006|Eric Sondheimer
Caleb Hamilton, a water polo standout at Irvine Northwood, signed his first autograph last year when some kids sought his signature during a junior tournament in Argentina.
"It was definitely a little weird but a cool feeling," he said.
Those kids knew what they were doing because Hamilton, 17, is one of America's best prospects.
He was the second-leading scorer and the youngest player on the U.S. team that won gold at the Junior Pan American Water Polo Championships in August in Montreal.
His coach at Northwood, Steve Carrera, doesn't hesitate to compare him to two of the greatest players in Southland history, the late Jim Toring and current U.S. national team member Tony Azevedo.
"Those are the people I always looked up to," Hamilton said. "And to be mentioned with them is awesome."
He is considered the No. 1 college prospect in the nation and a potential scoring machine for any program that lands him. At the high school level, he isn't just being double-teamed. Try triple-teamed.
He finds a way to provide instant offense. Last season, he scored 108 goals. He had eight goals in a game this season against Laguna Hills.
Today, he'll try to lead host Northwood, ranked No. 2 in the Southern Section Division I coaches' poll, against top-ranked Lake Forest El Toro. They met in the South Coast tournament final, with El Toro winning, 11-9. Hamilton scored 21 goals in five games of the tournament.
The opportunity to have played against 20-year-olds during international competition in the summer and train with U.S. national team members gives Hamilton invaluable experience and helps separate him from peers at the high school level.
Just from a physical standpoint, at 6 feet 3 and 200 pounds, he's bigger and stronger than many, but he was pushed around by older Hungarians and Russians during the summer, letting him know what awaits him at the college and international levels.
"I have the size and strength, and I have to try to find a way to get around them," he said.
There are two distinct qualities that define Hamilton: Athleticism and work ethic.
"If he'd be playing any other sport, he'd be a Division I athlete," Carrera said.
Blame it on his mother, Anastasia, for football losing out to water polo. She's a former swimmer who introduced him to the sport as a 7-year-old.
"I find it a lot of fun," he said. "I like the fact you can be down five goals and two minutes later, it can be tied. I love physical sports."

South American Games March 2010
So it's been about a couple months since I got back from Medellin Colombia. What a great tournament! I was finally on a national team...I play it off as if it's no big deal, but you know what, it is. It was like the realization of a childhood dream, and to do it with my little bro was even that much better. I worked so hard when I was a kid. I never missed practice...I was a club swimmer and a pretty good one, but polo was my release. I had so much fun doing it, and to be part of a national team is the highest level I can ever hope to obtain.
The first night of the tournament we played Argentina, I tell you it was a blood bath. They scored 6 goals a quarter. Finally in the 4th quarter I was so pissed, embarrassed, that I got the ball on a 6 on 5 from the 1 spot and DONUTED the goalie. The place erupted!!! I mean there must of been no joke 2500 people there. The cheers went on for what seemed like an eternity. I had never been one to celebrate goals, but I did on this one. We ended up losing 24-1 or something crazy like that.
The highlight for me was scoring against Brasil. I'm not gonna lie, I heard stories before I left about them grabbing balls, tearing your eyes out and all that kind of stuff. I was a little scared. I remember in the water after I scored my 1st goal, Steve was like "Dude, watch out, keep your head up!" After the 2nd goal I felt like the man! Instant respect from everyone at the tournament. Sure, our team wasn't very good, but everyone knew who the Carrera brothers were.
As the tournament went on I started gaining more and more confidence. I was the guy...I'm not bragging, I'm shocked that I can still be "that guy"! I'm OLD, I'm not supposed to be the leading scorer!!!
I really started to feel cocky in our last 2 games, we played Peru and we tied them the 1st time we played them. I scored 4 goals and got majored in the 4th quarter with about 2min left.
The next day we lost by 1 and it hurt. I scored 3 goals but I was in emotional pain. In the locker room, once everyone was out, I broke down and started crying..... I was going through so many emotions, I was thankful for the oppurtunity, I was thankful to all my coaches,I was thankful to my parents, I thanked the Lord for watching over me, and I was pissed we lost. It was a moment I will never forget.
I wish I would have written a blog everyday I was there because there is so much stuff that happened but this is what I remember the most. I never considered myself an Ecuadorian, I've been there once in my life (when I was 7), but now I do, and I am proud that I got to represent the country of my origin. Yes, my parents are proud=)

R.I.P. Stephen Pal
For those who don't know, Stephen Pal passed away on Wednesday night. He was one of the best referee's around. He did age group games as well as international. He was also a dear friend to our program, especially Steve Simmons (they played against each other in college).
Tonight at the CIF Girls Finals they will have a memorial to honor him. Please make it out and show your support. Our prayers are with his family through this rough time.
Steve Simmons in action!

BY TIM BURT

James Hartshorne was an immediate hit at Northwood. A star goalkeeper, Hartshorne helped the Timberwolves reach the CIF finals as a freshman.
It was the beginning of a stellar fouryear career for Hartshorne, the most valuable player of the Irvine World News all-city boys water polo team.
“I think I hit all sides of the table, starting with such a high going to back to back Division I (championship games) and then just stepping up as a teammate and really developing the players around me,” said Hartshorne, who has already signed a national letter of intent to attend UCLA.
“The junior year was more like learning how to be a coach in the water and a good example to the guys coming up below me.”
Hartshorne’s Northwood team came up short two years in a row in the CIF finals, losing to El Toro in 2006 and Newport Harbor in 2007.
But he said he still benefited from the experiences and was able to cap his career with two more solid seasons.
“I had people tell me a freshman has never done it (get to the finals),” Hartshorne said. “It was tough, but looking back it was the best for me, because I’m so hungry to play in college right now, I can’t wait to get started at UCLA. I’m so hungry after just tasting it and not getting there.”
Hartshorne helped the Timberwolves into the CIF playoffs all four years along with two league titles. This past year, he was first team all-Sea View League, first team all-county, second team all-CIF and most valuable goalie in the league.
The 6-1 Hartshorne had 1,126 saves in his four years as a starter. This year, he had 301 saves and 67 steals.
“He was the backbone of our program,” said Coach Ed Carrera. “He is one of those players who don’t come around very often.
“It’s really like having another coach in the water. He can pretty much run the offense and run the defenses to a T, without me saying a word.”
Hartshorne started playing goalie in the fifth grade.
“I was at this tournament and our goalie was gone, so we were just rotating through and it came to be my turn and they said, ‘James, you played pretty well, you’re going to play the next game too,’” he recalled. As it turned out, Hartshorne felt right at home in the goal. “I love being goalkeeper because I’ve always liked being a defensive player,” he said. “A great block feels so good.” So did the feeling that Hartshorne had after some memorable games with the Timberwolves.
“In the (CIF) quarterfinals my freshman year, we played Los Alamitos and it was just so tight,” he said. “I can still remember the last pass I made to win the game. I saw Caleb (Hamilton) up on his guy, so I made the full-court pass and he made the lob shot and that sent us to the semifinals.”
Hartshorne also had memories of the team’s victory over Los Alamitos in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs in his sophomore year.
And he remembered Northwood’s Sea View League victory over El Toro also when he was a sophomore.
“We came out and took it to them hard early and pulled off the win. It was good to see Jon Jon Colton and Travis Noll get a league championship their senior year,” Hartshorne said.
Hartshorne said many people have helped him in his career, including Haz Ortega, who was his first goalie coach. Dave Mikesell and Jeff Wherry also provided support along with his two coaches at Northwood, Steve and Ed Carrera.
The Carreras “watched over me here and developed me here in my high school years and gave me that opportunity my freshman year to prove myself,” he said.
Wins and losses were significant, but so were the friendships he made, Hartshorne said.
“The last two were just as much fun as the first two because I was playing with my best friends,” he said. “Everyone wants to win, but just being with them was something special.”

Northwood’s James Hartshorne signed a national letter of intent to play next season at UCLA.
Jack Mayers, Northwood
Mayers, a sophomore attacker, was a first team All-Sea View League player. He was ranked second among assist leaders in the county with 58.
“Jack is the youngest of the group and he’s a kid who we sort of watched progress through his age group (play),” said Northwood Coach Ed Carrera. “He has really elevated his game. Being a lefty, those lefties are so rare in our sport that it really opened up a lot for him.”
Mayers was critical in the counterattack.
“And Jack also scored some big game-winning goals for us,” Carrera said. “He hit the game-winner against Huntington Beach which put us in second place.”
Kyle Kim-E, Northwood
The Northwood senior was first team All-Sea View League and third team All-CIF, scoring 87 goals and recording 55 steals. He led the Timberwolves in scoring for the second year in a row.
“Kyle has been our big offensive threat the last two years,” said Northwood Coach Ed Carrera. “Everything has been centered around him at two meters. Interestingly enough, he was playing out of position a lot this year. Two meters isn’t his normal position, but he excelled.
“Against El Toro, the CIF champions, he scored six goals, which is no easy task. He’s a great all-around kid and very fast and a great defensive player.”
Dustin Hayashi and Bryce Wong were named Honorable Mention.

CIF
Here's how it works.
I am submitting a "At Large Petition" for us to go to CIF, if we get in we will probably play a "wild card game" on Tuesday.
The wild card game will officially qualify us for CIF if we win.
When we win, we will then play the next day against one of the division 1 league schools. Chances are we will play a team that got 1st in their league.
We can not see El Toro, Foothill, or HB because they are in the sea view league.
Sunday @ 11am the pairings will be posted on www.cifss.org website.
I'll keep you posted.

In the future
I am glad everything worked out for the most part.
In the future:
Vacations, Camps, Trips, Birthday parties, Finals, are not excuses to miss games and/or practices and should be planned after season or before.
Finals are important, but an hour and a half of workout will not get in the way of getting good grades. You need to improve your time management. Stay on top of your school work through out the semester so you don't have to cram.
I put a lot of time and effort into YOUR season, and I feel like it's been wasted with extra curricular activities. I know that the schedule was changed but the reschedule was a big headache because people made plans before season started.
Your time is my time during the season and if that doesn't work for you than you should re-evaluate if water polo @ Northwood is for you.
